Graphical, 360 no match for PS3

Ever since the PlayStation 3 got out on the market there have been different comparisons of the two systems. Well, there is nothing wrong with them, but now, graphically, with upcoming titles like Killzone 2 and even Uncharted 2, the Xbox 360 console has nothing to compare with to the PS3.

I recently read the review of Killzone 2 that was published in The Guardian newspaper (you can read it here) and the reviewer stated that the game is, and I quote; “not quite up to the awesome standard of 360′s Gears Of War 2″. I know he’s not talking about the graphics. There is nothing wrong with the game play in Killzone 2. It’s been too much picking of how much the PS3 suck, and too much hailing the 360. No great games and how the quality of the graphics that is not any greater than the 360. Well, I can agree that a lot of games for the PS3 are not that great graphically and story-wise. I can’t get how you, as a game producer, can release such games. Well, it’s also about how big budget you have, but anyway. Like Blacksite for example, I think that is one of the worst games ever. There is nothing great, or even good, with that game. The graphics would fit the PS2 system easily. Other games that also looks awful is Army Of Two, Kane & Lynch and Conflict: Denied Ops to name a few. Haze is a nice looking game, but the story is just awful. Also, it’s time for EA to ditch the Need for Speed series if they can’t make it any better or interesting, the PS3 version of Undercover is laggy. Even the upcoming Prototype game looks pretty decent compared to Killzone 2. They have not put any hard work in the surroundings, the cars look like cheap models like they did in GTA3 on PC for example, poor quality. Check this image.

Let’s talk about the price. Now, I don’t think the price is a big difference and the PS3 is not too expensive, but it’s not cheap either. Not if you look at the differences of the two consoles. The 360 has no Blu-Ray player, only DVD, and you don’t have to pay to play online games with the PS3. Just to get a decent standalone Blu-Ray player costs like the 360 console. So, that’s only good things for the PS3. Though, I am thinking of one thing. Many people suggests a price drop for the PS3, but how big price drop do we talk about here? Why should I care about a price drop now if I already have a console? Also, how would a price drop affect PSN? Will it still be free from monthly fees? Well, I hope so.

So, how is it with the development of the systems? Maybe the 360 is easier to produce and develop games on but I don’t think that’s something you can go for if you should do great games or if you are in the plans of making a game exclusive for the 360 or even a port to the PS3 system. With great I mean visually. It’s all a matter of how good you are to put out the best of anything. Those who can make the best out of the PS3 is Naughty Dog with their Uncharted-series, Guerrilla Games with Killzone 2 and SCEE with God Of War 3 so far, I think more developers will join this squad pretty soon. All these games are exclusive for PlayStation 3 and I think its great so they can fully concentrate on it to do the best possible game, because they know how to do it. The hard part has been to create a great engine, that’s the thing that takes time. Now, Guerrilla has a really great engine that they have worked on since they started with Killzone 2 over four years ago. Just take a look on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, I think this is still one of the best looking game ever made and this game was released in 2007. Other notable thing is that Drake’s Fortune only used about 30% of the PS3′s power and they are planning to use nearly 100% with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. If you’ve missed it, check out the first trailer here. Not to talk about Killzone 2. This will absolutely have the best graphics so far and I think they will have that title for a while. What concerns God Of War 3, you can’t make any real review of how the game will look, because it’s so far from completed, but what was shown the other day with the trailer, check it out here, it really looks promising and outstanding. The 360 has no games, not even upcoming, that can match this. PlayStation 3 has a big advantage with its Blu-Ray player, which have bigger storage on discs. Regarding the engine from Guerrilla Games, will they allow others to use it? Though I think they only accept use on the PS3 system.

2009 will be the year of PlayStation 3. A lot of exclusives are planned to be released this year and one of them is just ahead.

This contribution is just what I think of it. There will always be a war between PS3 and Xbox 360, or say Sony and Microsoft. Make your comments of what you think.

  4. Uh…. Killzone 2 has horrible textures close up, they are a hell of a lot worse than Gears of War 2′s. I have a PS3 and 360, so I would know. I guarantee that whoever wrote this article only has a PS3. Also, just so you know, the only thing that makes the graphics in Killzone 2 look good is the use of lighting which is absolutely incredible. If it weren’t for the lighting the graphics would look no better than Gears of War 2′s. And also, graphics isn’t everything, its actually barely anything. What really matters is story, multi-player, longevity and gameplay, which 360 beats out PS3 in every one of those categories. Let me give examples: Story = Mass Effect, best story in any video game ever. Multi-player = Halo 3, like it or not, Halo 3 is the most played online video game on Xbox 360, and without has the best community support. Don’t believe me? Go to bungie.net they update the site every few hours and update the game with new playlists almost every other day. Gameplay = Halo 3/Gears of War. Like it or not, Halo 3 has the most refined, perfectly tuned gameplay in any game. It even has its own top 10 on ESPN because it is so good. Just watch a few of those and you will see what I mean. And whenever someone after me posts “HALO 3 SUKS NUB X BOT”, just because you played it once at your friends house and sucked at it doesn’t mean the game sucks, it means you do. Longevity = Fallout 3/Mass Effect/GTA IV. I know what you morons are thinking, “2 of D3M GAM3s are MULT1 – PL4tf0rM” Well, guess what. Fallout 3 has 3 DLC packs exclusive to the Xbox 360, and GTA IV has 2 exclusive episodes that are over 15 – 20 hours long each, so considering most games only last for 10 hours, (Killzone 2 is only 8-9 depending on your skill) that is almost like the Xbox 360 has 2 exclusive GTA games, which is kind of a big deal.. I just wanted you to realize that graphics isn’t everything and just because something looks pretty doesn’t mean that it will actually be fun to play. Considering Killzone 2 probably the most annoying gameplay mechanics built into it like the way your sights bob up and down when you fire making it hard to aim or the fact that there is a .5 second delay from whenever you press a button or move a joystick on your controller to whenever it happens on your screen. It makes aiming a chore and irritating. And not only that, but Uncharted doesn’t even have multi-player, and its 10 hour long single player gives you no reason to go back through and play it, so its a really short game, but I will give it props, because it was some of the best 10 hours I’ve ever spent playing a video game. Heavy Rain and God of War III look amazing though, so I’m glad I have a PS3 for those, but for you to go out and try to say that the PS3 is better than the 360 just because it will finally have 1 game that has better graphics than the 360 on February 27th is just assanine of you. Not to mention the fact that the Xbox 360′s dashboard is better, online service is better, cross-game invites, 8 player chat, Netflix streaming, over 2,000,000 items of downloadable content in the Marketplace compared to PSN’s 10,000, achievement support for every game, guide button available while watching videos, unlike on the PS3, listen to whatever music you want in any game, contests and free give-aways every week, community spotlights, chances to play with celebrities, game tips from the best websites such as IGN or G4TV available for free instantly on the Xbox dashboard, loads of free content, includes an HDMI cable, headset, and 2 games. That definitely outweighs a blu-ray player and built in wireless considering that the 360 is only $200 and the PS3 is $400 when I could go to best buy and buy the wireless adapter for the 360 for $99 and buy a blu-ray player for $99. Don’t believe me? Look in this weeks add there are blu-ray players for less than $100. I wonder if any of you PS3 fanboys will actually read my comment before you flame me? Probably not.

  5. dammn, i read it all -_-

  6. i agree with you, media is against the Ps3, i don’t know why.

and Prototype looks crappy, it has a good gameplay mechanics, but story is very weak, i read some previews and hands-on and it seems like prototype is a gameplay game, not story telling, which i don’t like. ill be getting Infamous insted.

  7. LOOL

Stupid fanboy piece of shit , Gears2 is better than everything on Pshit3 and u dont even know the games who are coming out this year for 360 to u can say that Ps3 is better , u stupid asshole , get a life wannabe.

  8. Your a donut.

  9. When I see games that are developed for 2-4 years and have decent graphics but lack gameplay or originality I’m a little sad. I think Killzone 2 is good for the genre in terms of graphics but the gameplay is relatively poor given the controls and response time.

Personally I don’t like espionage games like Splinter Cell or MGS so I will not comment on those games. But why would I buy a console to wait 3 years to get a graphically equal product with poorer gameplay? The only reason to buy a PS3 is for a BluRay player. Not games.

Personally, I feel that if those PS3 games were developed for the 360 they would be equal for the textures but the 360 would be sharper due to the advanced anti-aliasing features and more powerful graphics card. The only thing limiting the 360 would be the storage issues.

This whole, it “only” uses 30% of the PS3 power is a marketing sham. Because it’s not streamlined does not mean that it’s only using such and such percentage. It means that at the moment programming these games is inefficient. If you have to waste 3 years developing a shooter to streamline it to your platform to have it look half decent then you’re wasting your time and money.

Everybody seems to overlook that these PS3 games that have such “great” graphics have had almost ALL of the development costs paid for by Sony.

God of War and like games are utterly terrible, Uncharted was bad. But you develop games for the lowest common denominator. Halo is another example of that style of development. It sucks for gamers. What about the days of Baldur’s Gate, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Doom and others where they were not graphical power houses of the time but had terrific gameplay. Instead we have Final Fantasy 7-beyond, and other JRPG’s that are terrible (especially on the 360.

Simply put 360 games have better gameplay, response time, and handling which is why more games sell on the 360 than the PS3.

  10. Useless article.

  11. I just read the headline in an aggregator, and my first thought was: “Who exactly gives a shit?”. Personally, and I can only speak for myself, I do not care how advanced one console could be over the other. They both have their advantages and drawbacks, and to me it’s not about graphics. The most advanced graphics can’t compensate for lack of gameplay. And having seen both GoW2 and Uncharted, I think the former has a lot more to offer than the latter when it comes to gameplay, story and atmosphere. But again, that’s just my opinion.

  12. X360 is finished

  13. Hi fella, I own both consoles and I agree that the PS3 has got some incredible looking games coming up but you obviously have not played Gears 2 and the few issues that you point out is because of that reason. For instance the blood looks the way it does because of the overall art style and once you start playing the game you would not want it looking any other way. The flame thrower’s flames for instance looks a lot more realistic than the one in Killzone 2. Check out the video review on Gametrailers web site and you can witness this with your own eyes.
After playing the Killzone 2 demo I would have to agree that it is hands down the best looking game in my personal opinion even though my wife likes the look of Gears a lot more. At the end of the day fella I do believe that the 360 has got a lot more in the tank and you should not count it out just yet.

  14. Killzone 2 should look good, they’ve been working on the damn thing for 4 and a half years.

  15. 360 has a game it’s called Alan Wake i’m no fanboy i have both systems and i can’t wait for Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 but i think Alan Wake looks amazing and will overall be a better game then Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2

  16. I agree all the words of this article.
PlayStation 3 is better than Xbox360.
Now this condition is on the way. Starting from the 2009 year, PS3 can surpass the Xbox360 with her exclusives.

  17. I agree it’s nice to see the PS3 actually gets the momentum it deserves for all this time. I mean I have a PS3 and 360, I like the features of live, but I like the gameplay and graphics of these Sony exclusives. Yes at the time Blu-Ray may have been a gamble for many people (Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD) now as we realize that Blu-Ray will be the next format of choice more people are realizing that they will utilize the PS3′s hardware. I’m sure developers when understanding that they have 50GB of space to work with that they will feel confident in making a remarkable game with no compression needed.

  18. Simple fact is Microsoft are srewed, they reached the limit of what their console can do and can’t improve their games significantly…. Just wait for GT5, it will be the Nail in the coffin..

  19. ps3 always had the better graphics performance, but devs couldn’t work yet with the ps3, I think after a year, when Third party finally knows the system like imsoniac, naughty dogg etc.. you’ll see a hugh difference in games between the xbox360 and ps3, but untill then comparing is just foolish.. Because the only console not capable in hd graphics is the wii.. xbox360 and ps3 are in the same war as the ps2 and xbox. Only difference is that the xbox360 has the adventage now and not ps3.

  20. im just getting tired of this killzone2 and graphics .i have played the demo my self and it’s OK graphically not to mention the BAD GAMEPLAY.
just look at resident evil 5 that wat i call superior graphics .
look close to the soldiers uniforms in killzone2 uh man it’s like they were using half life source engine (NOT KIDDING).
i don’t know why people are soo hyped for killzone2 im not even touching that game FOR GO SAKE IT’S AN FPS WITH BAD STOY AND UGLY LOOKING CHARACTER .it’s weird that the stupid article never mentions games like yakuza 3 ,heavy rain and FFversusXIII
for this year re5 will be the king!!!

  21. You’re gay. Killzone 2 sucks all it has is nice graphics. MGS4 is the only good title on the ps3. now shut your mouth you little punk wit’ cho’ punk blog. ps3 ain’t better than 360 and vice versa.

  22. *grasp*

  23. Hello my name is Bob,
I have read your artikel and i was really inpressed with your arguments. What I think you could say also is: that the ps3 give more patches to the ps3 which debug some parts of ps3.
What I was thinking about when i read your artikel was that you were right about that most games can’t be compared to the ps3 which makes me more glad that i bought a ps3.
I completly agree with your point. and i hope that others do so too.
PS is it true that killzone is going to give other game makers there engine? I mean share there experience only so that the makers will make a Ps3 exclusive game?

    greetings Bob

  24. Great article, its clear that in the long run the PS3 will come on TOP… killzone 2 say for it self…

  25. Finally an unbiased commentary on the state of gaming

  26. while i agree with what you have to say, this really is too much opinion and no real substance or reason why say uncharted wouldnt look as good on the 360

  27. lol

  28. Great article!! The Guaridan is a shite newspaper, trust me I know, I live in London. Gears is ok but it’s pale in comparison graphically to KZ2 and even Drake in my opinion. And I dont get the big deal with Gears, it’s got a soft pathetic story and nothing really innovative. KZ2, GOWIII, InFamous is where it’s at baby!!

  29. GPU is what graphics are about if ever. Cell (or in other words, the CPU) isn’t helping when it comes to resolutions and such, instead focusing more on physics based calculations, AI, etc.

The 360 has a GPU made from ATI and the PS3 from NVIDIA. Major differences were, at the time of their conception, that ATI (now AMD) allowed HDR with AA without any “shortcuts” unlike the PS3′s GPU and it made a bit of a difference.

Anyways, I read the opinion and it’s just that, opinion, not facts. To compare graphics power, take a multiconsole game (Assassin’s Creed, COD4, etc!) and check raw framrates and such. The PC has the 3DMark tests and such for this, and it’s the only way to see which GPU is faster (though 3DMark is… meh).

The consoles each are at the same level, give or take, in graphics house power. The PS3 can have more data (aka BlueRay) and has a slightly more powerful CPU but the 360 has been said to have a better GPU. What does this mean?

Nothing, both consoles produce superb graphics and Killzone, if it was developed for the 360 would look amazing, as would Gears 2 if produced for the PS3. Just a pity the author doesn’t seem to understand how graphics are made…

  30. get a life dude ;)

  31. I think that you are right in a lot you say, PS3 since Uncharted show that is a good console, and know with Killzone 2 the diference in each system is notorious, just seeing the amazing effects in Killzone 2, and the textures and the overall graphics in Ucharted 2 is a good signal, and finally God of War III that i think will be the maximun exponent of Sony to show the power of the console.

By the way the 100% of Uncharted 2 is not too sure, because that was not said by Naugthy Dog i think that Uncharted 2 will be and amazing title, but for sure thats will not be the 100% of the System even with God of War III a i think there will more to do with the PS3.

You should mention Gran Turismo 5: Prologue even if not the final product the game looks so damn good that there is no match in PC in driving simulator, know imagine how the game will look when it finally come out. I hope that GT5 include climatic effects, and blood and sand effects when you drive Rally Cars.

  32. Sorry if my english is not good.

  33. Excellent, I <3 Ps3 :)

  34. Yea i would agree. It just seems that people are just nit picking at the flaws of the Ps3, and once the flaws have been fixed, people just still find ways to down the system.

1st it was the Ps3 has no games argumenet. And then MGS4, R2, LBP, Ratchet and Clank, Heaveily Sword, and other games came out, not to mention the multiplatform hits such as Call of Duty and etc.

Then it was an argument that the Ps3 was loosing exclusives, but the truth was the games they they lost exclusivity still ended up on the Ps3 neways, so it didn’t loose much. Not to mention you see no news about xbox loosing its exclusives (Bioshock, Dead Rising, Eternal Sonata, maybe even Mass Effect)

  35. Bioshock.

  36. You kinda wandered off topic a lot….. But, I do agree, no game/s on 360 can match (graphically) PS3 games. Im talking mostly exclusives here. I think AlanWake looks very promising though, but nothing has been shown on it so I cant really say.

  37. get it

  38. I don’t know… With PS3′s Folding@Home running as arrays of individual processing units, I can’t see XBox 360 getting close to its GPU Processing Discovery.

But, I’m a heavy user of Maya and do a lot of programming myself. Graphics are as good as the design limits for each generational platform.

  39. You’re a picky bastard. You’re clearly a PS3 Fanboy. I’d like to point out that GoW 2 is supposed to look like the first one. Epic said that it would because they feel the got graphics right the first time round. Which they did I think Gears of War looks stunning.

I’m not an Xbox fanboy though I’m a PC elitist.

  40. In the end PS3 is coming out on top.

  41. Technically, Sony has always had the hardware with the potential factor, however developers seldom take the time to get the real power from the system. Notable exceptions are games like ICO and Killzone 2. Seldom do games come around that immerse you to the point you do not feel as if you are playing a game.

Killzone rocks on so many levels. SONY has a bright future ahead if it keeps making games like ICO and Killzone 2 quality.

  42. ps3 all the way…

  43. You are right on everything

  44. I agree with what you’re saying but damn, is English your second language?

  45. Hi you stupid, fuckin’ blog owner. Your blog sucks. Mine is much better. Visit and comment.

  47. I for one can’t wait until God of War III comes out. Although Drake 2 is looking pretty sweet too!

  48. [...] Graphical, 360 no match for PS3 Ever since the Playstation 3 got out on the market there have been different comparisons of the two systems. Well, [...] [...]

  49. Seriously! I’m just waiting for games besides GTA4 to really, really make use of the PS3′s computing power.

  50. Is this a blog? I thought it is shit..

  51. I’m promoting my blog. Nothing wrong. Report to WordPress if you dare, asshole!

  53. I believe the reason the Xbox 360 had such good looking games in the begging of its cycle is due to the similar development tools that are where used for the Xbox (Meaning the developers of the games could easily transition into the Xbox 360 code structure and make better looking games from the start). [The Wii is very similar to the Gamecube] With the PS3, I believe it had a different set of development tools and programmers had to learn how to use them. There is no question about PS3 capability in terms of Xbox 360, the only question that remains is that will developers take advantage of the extra potential?
I think PS3 needs to work on its advertisement campaign as its not doing a good enough job in my opinion.

  54. Until the PS3′s online expierience can match the 360′s, I think the PS3 will always be a step behind. Even though the Xbox Live costs, it’s only 50 dollars for 13 months. I used to own a PS3 and I was really excited about Home releasing, and as soon as it did it was the biggest let down I saw on the PS3. Sony is making progress by releasing a first-party mic and keupad, but I believe the most important thing that need to be upgraded is the ease of getting online, inviting friends, jumping into matches, and having the abaility to do this all from the cross media bar, not an in-game menu. This is the biggest advantage the Xbox has on the PS3.

  55. Comparison is pretty obvious on hardware who wins. Sony designed & manufactured the PS3 with the most up to date bleeding edge technology when the PS3 was launched. They took a risk with the blu-ray, and it was a good bet IMO.

Nobody questions PS3 has superior hardware compared to ANY gaming console available for purchase by general public today.

But is the PS3 “better” overall than 360 or Wii? Not in every aspect, not in sales, and it depends on the type of gamer you ask.

Sales is the obvious aspect that PS3 lacks compared to the 360. If you want to compare a console that launched the next day after PS3, look at the Wii’s console sales. As a for profit company, Nintendo did a better job for its shareholders by turning a profit on every Wii console it sold (unlike Sony) and going after a bigger target market to sell its product to (unlike Sony).

If you do a comparison to Sony & Nintendo in Yahoo Finance, you’ll find Nintendo delivered 20% more value to its stockholders.

Doing more comparisons with the 360, it’s taken Sony years to catch up to the online gaming experience created by Microsoft’s XBOX Live. PS2 online gaming was fractured, if even available for games, with different implementations by different game manufacturers to play online, while the original Xbox had Xbox live. Sony’s caught up to this now on PS3 with after-market sofware downloads & updates, but put itself at a competitive disadvantage by allowing Microsoft to have the superior online gaming experience for a number of years, releasing Playstation Home…beta…December 2008.

Sales are up for 360 & Wii…down for 25% for PS3 last month (Jan 2009):

    PS3 Shows Year-on-Year Sales Drop

NPD January 09: Xbox 360 Sales Surge, PS3 Sales Slump

So hardware wise, yes PS3 is the clear winner. However, in sales, exclusive releases, market penetration, number of games available, and overall appeal to public, and profitability, Sony’s been losing since PS3 launch.

  56. waaaaaaaaaw so cool

  57. hi thx , you have a good blog i get a good information about playstation nice jobs and make a many article about playstation
